CNS Board

The CNS board is comprised of the following parent volunteers.

Leigh Detmer

I am mom to Cole (who just graduated from the Roost after 3 years at CNS) and Reese who is in the Nest now.  I grew up in Colorado and taught kindergarten and 1st grade there before my husband’s work brought us to central Illinois for a bit, and then to Ithaca in early 2020.  It’s been a privilege for me to see CNS in action through the lens of a substitute teacher and board member.  I love meeting new families here, believe strongly in the cooperative school model, and am excited to support our special community as a CNS Board Co-President!

Bryn Huegerich

My son, Quinn, is in the Roost this year (a proud former Nooker and Nester). I have two older children: Geary (a former Nest and Roost student) and Eloise. They both attend Belle Sherman Elementary School. We moved from North Carolina to Ithaca 7 years ago and we love the snow and exploring all that Ithaca has to offer! I used to teach elementary school and am now a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist. I am slowly returning to work after staying home with my children. I have been a substitute teacher at CNS for the past 2 years and have loved getting to work with the wonderful teachers and students and being part of this magical co-op community.

Kaki Johnston

VP of the Nest

I grew up in Ithaca and attended CNS in the late 80's before attending Cayuga Heights Elementary, Boynton Middle School and then leaving town for boarding school.  I came back to Ithaca to attend Cornell and studied public policy with a focus on education and social inequality.

After graduating I moved to Manhattan and worked as the Director of High School Placement and Alumni Counselor at The East Harlem School at Exodus House.  In this role, I guided students and families through the NYC public high school application process and for select students secured scholarship funds and assisted families with applications and financial aid for competitive parochial and top New England boarding schools.  I also taught 7th and 8th grade math!

In 2013, I moved back to Ithaca and spent six years working as a fundraiser for Cornell, first as an annual fund officer at Johnson Business School and later as a major gifts officer for the Athletics Department and the College of Human Ecology.

I stepped away from my role at Cornell in 2019 to focus on family but have continued to serve on several boards including The SPCA of Tompkins County, Ithaca Community Recovery, and The East Harlem School at Exodus House. I live in Trumansburg with my husband, Neal, step-daughter, Madeline, son, Ira, our dog, Mabel, countless chickens and two miniature donkeys, Elizabeth and Albert.  Madeline is going into sixth grade in Trumansburg and Ira will be starting in the Nest this Fall.  I am thrilled to be a part of the CNS community again!

Josh Lambert

VP of the Nook

I am an Ithaca native, husband to Rachel Lambert, and father of two sons. Leon is 3 and in the Nook while Lawrence is an infant. I’ve spent 20 years as a bar manager in local venues and restaurants. I’m currently a house spouse looking to get involved with my children’s early education. I hope to use my people skills and communication in this position to work well with the teachers, parents, kids and community that led us to choose CNS for our family.

Mariel Pinciotti

VP of the Roost

I am mom to Alfie (in the Roost). Our first year at CNS was last year in the Nook, and we have come to love this community so much! I’m a native Western New Yorker (Jamestown) and earned my BA in journalism from the Park School at IC. That’s also where I met Alfie’s Dad. 🙂 After graduation I lived in Chicago for about 8 years, working in advertising, and then in Los Angeles for another 8, making my career in book publishing at Disney. California is where Alfie was born!

Tired of being separated by distance and the pandemic, we returned to Ithaca in July 2021 to be closer to family. We’re enjoying rediscovering all the natural beauty Ithaca has to offer, this time with Alfie and our pug, Dewey. We’re excited to be strengthening our ties to our CNS  community and our new home!

Emily Fuhrmann

Mother to Elijah (going into the Roost) and Theodore (an infant), I went to Lansing High School and went to TC3 and SUNY Oswego and finished at Goddard College(Vermont).

I have also lived in Florida and most recently Philadelphia where I met my husband, Derek. Covid brought us back to upstate NY and we currently live in Freeville.

I worked for 15+ years in the restaurant industry; most recently managing a restaurant before leaving Philadelphia. My degree is in Health Science and I am a Certified Health Coach; and using none of my background - I currently work for eCornell in Student Support.

Last year was our first year with CNS and I am looking forward to being more involved this year and supporting this wonderful community.

Alex McNeil

My son, Lincoln, is 3 years old and will be in the Roost this year. We have a big, modern family! Lincoln has Dad, Brandi, and Charlotte (3), as well as Mom, Scott and Liv (6).

I live in Dryden with three large dogs, Hadrian, Eponine, Dovi, and Cucumber the cat. Lincoln and I enjoy spending time with family, friends, and being outside.

My professional background is in events planning, coordination and management. Recently I have transitioned to AV and event technology services.

Lincoln's Dad, Ryan, and I look forward to another wonderful year as part of the CNS community. I am looking forward to helping support all the wonderful things happening here at CNS as Secretary!

Norma Schwab

Community Member

I was born and raised mostly in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, ending up in Ithaca in 1983 with my husband Steward and two young children.  Six more children, five grandchildren and almost thirty-nine years later we are still in Ithaca!

My children are all beneficiaries of the Ithaca City School system, and are all now grown.  Several of them attended CNS in the 80’s and I spent my share of time helping out in the classroom and taking home laundry in addition to other chores.  CNS was then and is now a wonderful place for children to grow and thrive.

I am a former nurse-turned-lawyer.  My legal career has been varied, including stints as an Assistant District Attorney for Tompkins County, working in two private law firms (True Walsh & Miller, and Brock and Schwab), being the City Attorney for Ithaca, and lastly working at Cornell in the Office of University Counsel, retiring in June 2019.
My past board experience highlights include service on the boards of Visiting Nurse Service in Ithaca and Planned Parenthood, as well as too many PTAs to count!
My main interests include most any kind of exercise, reading, and in the times-before-Covid, travel.

Holly Schindler

Staff Representative

Holly is a native of Ithaca. Her teaching adventures ranges from nurturing the love of learning in progressive private preschools to working in public Pre-K with the Ithaca City School District. Her teaching experience also includes owning, directing, and teaching at her own arts and nature based preschool in Caroline, NY. Holly's love for the arts and the natural world, silly sense of humor, and deep affection for children make her an asset to CNS. She has a degree in Early Childhood. Holly is trained in the Reggio Emilia approach to early education and interweaves the creative principles in her classroom. In her free time Holly enjoys dabbling in many forms of the creative arts, hanging out with her two energetic sons, and laughing with her husband.
